Full Recap
In Episode 4 of Legend of Zang Hai, the stakes rise as Zang Hai navigates a treacherous web of deceit, betrayal, and manipulation. The episode begins with Zhuang Luyin’s ruthless arrest of feng shui masters, imprisoning them in an underground palace modeled after the imperial mausoleum—a death trap from which no one has ever escaped alive.
Driven by vengeance for his family, Zang Hai disguises himself as a feng shui master and allows himself to be captured by Qu Jiao, gaining access to the same deadly labyrinth. With unmatched intellect and skill, Zang Hai leads the trapped feng shui masters through layers of intricate traps, inching closer to freedom.
However, tragedy strikes when someone accidentally triggers the infamous bone-snapping silk mechanism, killing everyone except Zang Hai, who narrowly escapes with his life. His survival shocks Chu Huaiming, who suspects Zang Hai might be descended from the original craftsmen who built the imperial mausoleum. Instead, Zang Hai reveals he used the Nine Stars Secret Method to break the mechanism, further fueling suspicions about his true identity.
Zhuang Luyin, hearing of Zhan Hai’s success, summons him to oversee the Empress Dowager’s burial preparations. Despite Chu Huaiming’s warnings about Zang Hai’s mysterious background, Zhuang Luyin has no choice but to appoint Zang Hai due to the emperor’s impending deadline.
Zang Hai cleverly deduces that rain will naturally unlock the burial mechanism, using celestial phenomena to support his claim. When Eunuch Sun arrives during the rain, Zhuang Luyin becomes even more convinced of Zang Hai’s abilities.
To strengthen his position, Zang Hai fabricates a story about Noble Consort Li appearing in his dream, requesting a joint burial with the late emperor. This ploy not only silences doubters but also prevents feudal lords from entering the capital for mourning, allowing only the King of Linzi to keep vigil.
Zhuang Luyin orders Chu Huaiming to accompany Zhan Hai to inspect Noble Consort Li’s tomb. There, Zang Hai performs a calculated act: walking around the tomb, kneeling, and expressing gratitude. By noon, the tomb collapses, seemingly fulfilling Noble Consort Li’s wishes. Zang Hai boldly claims her spirit aided him, earning Zhuang Luyin’s trust—and the collective reverence of those present.
Despite Zang Hai’s apparent loyalty, Zhuang Luyin grows wary of his growing influence and considers eliminating him to protect his secrets. However, Zang Hai swears allegiance and offers his expertise in architecture and geomancy to serve Zhuang Zhixing. Meanwhile, Qu Jiao reaffirms fragments of Zang Hai’s identity: orphaned at a young age, trained by a craftsman, and recently arrived in the capital.
Fully convinced of Zang Hai’s fabricated backstory, Zhuang Luyin grants him residence in the marquis’ estate. As Zang Hai settles into the Gentlemen’s Quarters, he learns the junior aides’ primary role is documenting Zhuang Luyin’s legacy—the so-called "Zhuang Family Chronicles," glorifying Yang Zhen’s contributions. Sensing rivalry, Chu Huaiming warns Yang Zhen about Zang Hai’s ambitions, but Yang dismisses these concerns, believing Zang Hai poses no real threat.
Sensing rivalry, Chu Huaiming warns Yang Zhen about Zang Hai’s ambitions, but Yang dismisses these concerns, believing Zang Hai poses no real threat. Yang Zhen assigns Zang Hai menial tasks, such as repairing the ancestral hall and inventorying relics, hoping to keep him away from Zhuang Luyin.
Undeterred, Zang Hai completes each task meticulously while plotting his ascent. When Yang Zhen forces Zhan Hai to redo the relic inventory under guard surveillance, pressure mounts. Zang Hai shares this finding to Gao Ming, vowing to replace Yang Zhen and secure his place in power. Meanwhile Zang Hai finds a hiding place and secret ROP within the library.
Key Events:
1. Deadly Underground Trial
Zang Hai leads some feng shui masters (who are gathered by force and not skilled) through Marquis Pingjin's booby-trapped mausoleum replica
Showcases his genius by solving the "Nine Stars" mechanism (based on real Song Dynasty tomb designs)
Only survivor when others trigger bone-snapping silk traps (horror movie-esque sequence)
2. Rainmaker Revelation
Uses astronomy to predict downpour that "unlocks" burial site
Blames Noble Consort Li's "spirit" for coffin collapse (actually his hidden wooden wedge + water damage)
Gains Zhuang Luyin's wary trust by solving burial crisis
3. Infiltration Begins
Given a junior aide role at Pingjin Residence
Discovers Yang Zhen's corruption (faking artifact records) and incurs his jealousy and suspicions. Yang Zhen heavily suppresses the rise of junior aides while putting on a fake kind facade.
Begins psychological warfare against rival advisor Chu Huaiming
Cliffhanger:
Yang Zhen posts guards to frame Zang Hai for theft - just as Eunuch Sun arrives unexpectedly.
