The Legend of Zang Hai Episode 7 Recap. Starring Xiao Zhan and Zhang Jingyi. “The Tomb Will Test the Living”
In one of the most harrowing and heroic episodes yet, Legend of Zang Hai Episode 7 plunges deep into death’s corridor, exposing treachery in the empire’s highest ranks and the unshakeable will of a son avenging his father’s memory.
After three brutal months, Zang Hai and Ji Qun—once a loyal subordinate to Zang Hai’s late father—complete restoration work on the imperial mausoleum with a band of eight elite artisans and other workers. Unknown to most, this assignment is a death sentence in disguise.
The scheming Chu Huaiming and Yang Zhen have orchestrated a sinister plan: all ten men are to be entombed alive alongside the Empress Dowager, an ancient and cruel burial rite disguised as imperial honor.
But Zang Hai is no pawn. Long suspicious, he secretly sets countermeasures in motion, including planting Gao Ming, his master as a disguised fortune-teller—to sway General Zhuang Luyin’s perception. When the imperial decree is made public, sentencing Zang Hai and the artisans to death, they agree without resistance—stunned yet dignified.
Ji Qun’s quiet loyalty mirrors the silent resignation of the artisans, who value the survival of their families over their own lives. Zang Hai, burning with fury, vows not to die like cattle.
On the day of the burial, the mausoleum swells with dignitaries. The Emperor, stricken by illness and grief, remains behind. Inside, Zang Hai gathers intel: Minister of Rites Shi Yiping and Minister of Revenue Zhao Bingwen—righteous men; Zhuang Luyin leads the military; his son, Vice Minister of Works Zhuang Zhifu lurks nearby. Chu Huaiming, merely a servant of Zhuang’s ambition, plays the obedient lackey.
As the artisans perform their final inspection, they’re guided into the inner sanctum and offered a final feast—laced with a delayed poison. The doors slam shut. Trapped, their fate sealed. Chu Huaiming and Yang Zhen watch from outside, triumphant, smug in their supposed victory. The mausoleum’s deadly mechanisms, they believe, guarantee Zang Hai’s death.
But Zang Hai refuses silence. When the awakening bell tolls—signaling the sealing of the tomb—he rallies the artisans. They abandon the poisoned meal and choose resistance. Discovering a hidden trigger embedded in the ceiling, Zang Hai and the men attempt to reach it.
One artisan dies instantly, a trap unleashing arrows from the walls. Undeterred, Zang Hai grabs a metal plate to shield himself and leaps. Ji Qun and the remaining artisans cover him with their own bodies, forming a human wall of protection.
Arrows rain down. One by one, the artisans fall—honor etched in their dying breath. Ji Qun, riddled with arrows, still shields Zang Hai until the bricks break and the trigger is pulled. The gate rises. With blood streaming and death crawling close, Zang Hai hauls Ji Qun toward freedom. But the gate begins to descend.
Ji Qun, mortally wounded, halts Zang Hai with a final act of defiance. Using his body to hold the stone gate open, he urges Zang Hai to escape. Before the gate crashes down, Zang Hai reveals the truth: he is Zhinu, son of Kuai Duo—the man Ji Qun once served.
A smile crosses Ji Qun’s bloodstained face as he perishes with dignity. Unlike his previous calmer expression in the dungeon, Zang Hai sobs bitterly, broken hearted over the deaths of the artisans that he had spent time with for the past three months.
Outside, all eyes widen as Zang Hai—cloaked in blood and dust—emerges alive. The duanlong stone, meant to seal the tomb forever, has stopped halfway. Chu Huaiming and Yang Zhen are stunned. Gao Ming’s fortune proves true: Zang Hai’s supposed benefactor lives.
Yet the power-hungry Yang Zhen tries to twist the narrative, demanding Zang Hai return to the tomb or die by arrow. Zang Hai, defiant, declares it is not his time to die. Zhuang Luyin challenges him—if he is truly meant to live, why hasn’t the duanlong stone fallen?
Then fate intervenes.
An eunuch rushes in: the burial hour is about to pass. Zang Hai seizes the moment and, with piercing precision, accuses Yang Zhen of sharing the late Emperor’s birth characters—making him the rightful companion in death. Chu Huaiming is cornered and confirms the claim under pressure.
Zhuang Luyin feigns comfort, promising rescue. Yang Zhen, desperate and believing the lie, enters the tomb. As the stone begins to fall, panic sets in. Yang Zhen screams betrayal. Arrows pierce his flesh. In a final moment of betrayal, he exposes Zhuang Luyin’s crimes—before death silences him.
The officials are stunned. The truth roars louder than the stone gate. Zang Hai stands amidst corpses and treachery—alive, rising, more determined than ever.
